The National Health Service (NHS) in England, UK, is launching a new programme that rewards people who make walking a daily habit. Beginning early next year, participants will be encouraged to walk for 30 minutes every day for a month. By doing so, they will cover between 42 and 60kms a month, the slowest walker covering the same distance as a marathon. People can track their progress using a smartphone, smartwatch or an online platform. The daily 30 minutes do not have to be completed all at once. A short walk in the morning and another later in the day will count towards the goal. Those who complete the challenge will qualify for rewards, which are expected to include vouchers and discounts. This scheme is part of the NHS’s long-term plan to improve public health.
