The United Kingdom shut its last coal power plant located in central England on September 30, putting an end to the country’s electricity generation from the fossil fuel. UK closed down the Ratcliffeon- Soar station, which had been operational since 1967, in a bid to shift to renewable energy sources. With this move, UK has become the world’s first major economy to end coal-based electricity production. UK had been dependent on coal ever since the Holborn Viaduct power station, the world’s first coal-fired power station, was constructed in London in 1882. Around four decades ago, approximately 80% of Britain’s electricity production depended on coal. However, its dependency on coal decreased steadily thereafter.
