Tricks and Giggles

April 1 is celebrated as April Fools’ Day in many countries. On this day, people around the world play light-hearted and harmless tricks on each other, screaming ‘April Fool’ to the targets of their mischievous jokes. Though the origin of this day is unclear, people have been playing April Fools’ Day pranks for over a century, with tricks evolving to become more humorous and creative over time. What’s more, different parts of the world have different traditions and practices to celebrate this day. SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers how they plan to fool their friends this April Fools’ Day. Here’s what they had to say.

This year, I plan to trick my friends with a fake home assignment. I’ll come up with a worksheet with bizarre topics such as, ‘Why should dogs work as chefs in restaurants?’ and ‘Why should unicorns contest in a presidential election?’. I’ll slip these worksheets into my friends’ desks or lockers when they are unaware. Then, I’ll put on a serious face and ask them if they have completed the assignment. I’ll carefully watch their reaction as their confusion begins to grow. Finally, after they brainstorm and write the weird assignment, I will laugh out loud and tell them it was a joke.

I plan to fool my friends by pretending that there is a surprise test. I will enter the classroom with a serious look and ask my friends, “Did you study for the test today?” On hearing this, my friends will get worked up and hurriedly flip through pages of their books. When the teacher enters the class, I will pretend to be even more nervous. Just as my friends get more anxious and begin to sweat, I will say, “Relax! There’s no test. Gotcha!” Oh! What an incredible, sneaky prank it will be!

My best friend Shivani and I are still deciding what prank to play on our other friend. Last year, we had put slime in our friend’s shoes. Shivani kept our other friend busy by talking to her about homework, while I put the sticky slime I made in her shoes. After that, we kept looking at our friend to observe her reaction. She groaned in the weirdest way! Shivani and I laughed very hard! Our friend thought she had a dead lizard in her shoe. This year, we might play a similar prank on our friend or come up with a new prank.

I have a friend named Aparna who is absolutely terrified of lizards and other creepy crawlies. I have always had the temptation of dropping a fake lizard in her bag, but never got the chance. So, this April, she’s in for a surprise. I also have a ‘shock pen’ that gives out a harmless electric shock every time you press it. I have always wanted to try it out on another friend and then tease her about not being able to do such a simple thing as writing.

I have arranged for a fake phone call to fool one of my friends. I have a friend who admires Alia Bhatt. I have asked another friend to pretend to be Alia Bhatt and call from a different number to make the call sound convincing. It will be fun watching my friend’s expressions while she thinks she is talking to her favourite celebrity!

I will prank my friends by giving them a piece of cake, but instead of using icing, I will use another ingredient. It will be so funny when they make weird faces and spit the cake out! Next, I will make a chocolate-shaped Barbie and eat it in front of my friend. When she asks me for one, I will give her a real Barbie instead. I’m sure she will scream in irritation. That’s when I will say “April Fool!”
