Holi, also known as the ‘festival of colours’, will be celebrated on March 25 this year. People celebrate Holi by smearing coloured powders and spraying coloured water on each other. SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers about the importance of colours and what colours mean to them. Here’s what they had to say.

Colours are used to express different emotions. The same colour may arouse different feelings in different people. Colours add contrast to the world. If all objects were of the same colour, it would be difficult to differentiate one thing from another. The world would be less appealing. Colours are an important medium of expression for me. The colours I wear often represent my mood. When I am happy, I wear the colours I like. My favourite colour is purple. It cheers me up. When I am stressed, I like looking at light colours or very dark colours. The blue sky during the day and the night sky calm and relax my mind.

Colours influence my feelings and help me connect with culture, hence they are very meaningful to me. For instance, when I come across the colour blue, it reminds me of the sea or sky and makes me relaxed. Similarly, vibrant orange or red colours evoke feelings of excitement, energy and passion in me. Colours play an important role in society. Green is associated with environmental friendliness while orange is considered sacred at pujas. However, the same colour’s significance may vary from region to region. For example, in the USA, white is worn by brides, however, in China and India, the same colour is worn at funerals. Firms must consider these colour connotations while creating merchandise and logos. When used in combinations, colours can create a unique outcome, for example, the colours of the Indian flag will unite Indians in any part of the world.

Colours help us communicate without words. They help us recognise things around us. Different species of birds, fish and animals are recognised by their unique colours. Chameleons change colour to match their surroundings, which I find amazing. Clothing designs, houses and nature are beautiful only because of colours. Colours affect my emotions. My favourite colour is blue. Wearing blue clothes makes me happy. When I am stressed, I look at the blue evening sky to calm myself down. I enjoy watching the different shades of the sky when the sun is setting. Seeing pretty, colourful flowers also makes me happy.

In my opinion, colours are magical. Colours evoke cheerfulness and happiness, be it the vibrant colours of Holi or the seven colours of the rainbow. How dull a world devoid of colours would be! From nature’s colourful flora to the vibrant attire flaunted during celebrations, colours make the world lively. Every colour evokes a different emotion and tells a different story. Red is associated with passion while green is associated with freshness. Colours help me express myself, whether I am choosing clothes to wear or painting a picture. They also influence my mood. A splash of pink cheers me up while grey makes me think. Colours brighten my day just like friends. They help me express myself through my attire and art. They make life vibrant and meaningful.

I love to spend time in nature only because its colours calm and comfort me. The blue sky, the greenery, colourful birds and butterflies make me happy instantly. I think the world would be very boring if everything was black and white. Books would be dull without colourful illustrations. Colours play an important role in making television shows, photographs, videos and mobile applications engaging. It is believed that a person’s colour preference reflects their personality. I like wearing black and red clothes. I feel these colours suit my personality. Most masterpieces would be incomplete without colours. Each colour has different shades, which make paintings beautiful.

Emotions are expressed through colours. I associate red with anger, blue with coolness and purple with nervousness. In a world without colour, it would be difficult to express emotions.
The colours of the rainbow Are like the dance of the rain and sun. The colours of the flowers Give me joy and grace. The colours of the sunlit world Bring wonder and warmth to my eyes. The colours of the pretty birds Brighten up my sky.
