Long ago, when Europe’s towns were small and people rarely travelled far, life was structured around a system called feudalism. In this world, land represented power. Noble lords ruled over large estates and peasants worked on the land in exchange for a small share of their harvest. For generations, life moved along in this well-worn pattern. But as time passed, small changes started to shake the foundations of feudal society.
