According to researchers at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finland, the pace of temperature rise in the Arctic region in the past few decades is four times faster than that of the rest of the planet. Known as Arctic amplification, this phenomenon is believed to be caused by emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, which trap heat.

According to data collected from 1979 to 2021, the speed of warming is up to seven times faster in the Barents Sea and its islands, making it the most rapidly warming location on the globe. The white sea ice in the Arctic region, which reflects the sun’s rays to space, has begun to melt as a result of climate change. This causes the dark ocean to absorb more radiation, which melts more ice, giving rise to a dangerous cycle.

In spite of extremely cold temperatures, around four million people live in the Arctic.
