Researchers at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, have found a piece of the Earth’s crust that is over 3 billion years old in the ancient mountains of Finland. According to researchers, this discovery is significant as it sheds light on the formation of Scandinavia. On examining zircon crystals found in Finland, researchers discovered that their chemical fingerprint matches those of Greenland’s rock samples, suggesting that Scandinavia’s bedrock was actually formed in Greenland. The discovery suggests that the formation of Scandinavia took place about 3.75 billion years ago, which is much earlier than what scientists had estimated previously.
