The Chest of Betrayal

sent by Sahasra Somalanka, Class 7, Tatva Global School, Hyderabad

Ram, Ben and Sam lived in a cosy village and they were the best of friends. Their bond was often said to be as strong as their favourite sturdy oak, which stood tall in the middle of the village.

Ram was well known for his friendly nature. He always knew the right thing to relieve anybody from disappointment. Ben was known to have a heart as vast as the endless sky but Sam was slightly greedy at times, drawing a bad impression towards him. Despite these differences, they shared countless memories together.

One day as Sam was sitting under the tree alone, a sudden rush of thoughts hit him. The greed stormed in him. Sam persuaded the other two of them to come with him to look for treasure that was hidden in the forbidden forest; it was something they had heard from their ancestors.

With loads of trust, they set out on the journey. Deep in the woods, they discovered a chest of treasure. Sam, blinded with greed, took the chest and made a run, leaving Ram and Ben behind. Sam had totally ignored the mighty danger standing right behind his friends. Yes, there was a giant beast all set to feast. Though the friends fought bravely and managed to escape, they were heartbroken about Sam. They also realised that Sam had escaped with the treasure only to discover that it was worthless and fake. Regretful, Sam learned the true cost of greed too late.

Ram and Ben brought many changes to their life after this. Thanks to this incident, they never developed close attachments with anyone even if it were the closest of friends and the strongest of bonds.

Moral: Friendship is priceless but greed can shatter even the strongest of bonds.
