The fourth edition of the Asian Para Games, which is a multi-sport event held every two years for physically disabled athletes in Asia, was hosted at Hangzhou in China from October 22 to October 28.
303 Indian athletes participated in the event and came back with 111 medals; this is India’s largest medal haul ever. India stood fifth in the medal tally with 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze medals.
Sumit Antil clinched a gold in the javelin throw F64 event with a throw of 73.29mts, setting a world record.
Para-athlete Ankur Dhama bagged golds in the men’s 5,000mt T11 race and the men’s 1,500mt T11 race, making him the first Indian to clinch two golds in a single Asian Para Games edition.
India won its first-ever medals in para-rowing, para taekwondo and para canoe.
India also won medals in club throw F51, javelin throw F46, rapid chess, discus throw F54/55/56, badminton, powerlifting and shooting.
Aichi Prefecture and its capital city Nagoya may host the 2026 Asian Para Games.
