The 2024 Candidates Tournament, a chess event organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), took place in Canada from April 3 to 22. 16 top international players including five Indians took part in the event.
Dommaraju Gukesh, a 17-year-old grandmaster from India, became the youngest winner of the tournament after his final-round match against USA’s Hikaru Nakamura ended in a draw.
This victory qualifies Gukesh to compete against China’s Ding Liren for the World Championship title later in 2024.
Gukesh is only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to emerge victorious in the tournament.
