The tallest Nataraja statue in the world was installed at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, which was the venue for the G20 summit held on September 9 and 10. The statue, which is a representation of the Hindu god Shiva in dancing form, is 27ft tall. It is made from a unique alloy called ‘ashtadhatu’ comprising eight metals including copper, silver and gold and weighs 18 tonnes. The statue was sculpted by practitioners of an ancient Chola sculpting technique from Tamil Nadu’s Swamimalai. A traditional and very intricate lost-wax casting method was used to construct the statue and its completion took seven months.
