Soumya Swaminathan, who formerly served as the chief scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO), has been appointed as the principal advisor of the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) by the Union government. She has been appointed to this post on a pro-bono basis. In her new role, Swaminathan will provide advice on effectively achieving the goals of the programme, evaluate current methods of dealing with tuberculosis (TB) and propose improvements. She will also work towards enhancing TB research strategies and be involved in developing global expert groups that will assist with eradicating the disease. In addition to this, she will evaluate the effectiveness of NTEP, which has been initiated by the Indian government to eradicate TB by 2025.
