Sophie Adenot, a European Space Agency astronaut, achieved a historic feat by becoming the first French woman to walk in space. Adenot accomplished this milestone as part of a mission that involved moving outside the International Space Station (ISS) to replace an antenna that enables mission control in Houston, USA, and the ISS to communicate. 44-year-old Adenot was accompanied by Indian-origin National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut Anil Menon for the repair work. With this milestone, Adenot has followed Italy’s Samantha Cristoforetti as the second European woman to perform a spacewalk. She is also only the second French woman to travel to space after now-retired astronaut Claudie Haigneré.
