In January 2022, as the temperature dropped below 0˚C across the dunes of the Sahara Desert, hypnotic patterns of snowfall were seen across the desert. In the last 42 years, the desert has witnessed snowfall for the fifth time—1979, 2016, 2018, 2021 and now 2022. The town of Aïn Séfra situated in the northwestern region of Algeria, which is known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert, witnessed a light dusting of snow.
