Sindhutai Sapkal, a renowned social worker and Padma Shri recipient, passed away on January 4, 2022 at the age of 73 years. She was fondly known as ‘Mai’. She ran an orphanage in Pune, Maharashtra, where she adopted more than 1,000 orphaned children and educated them. Many of her adopted children have gone on to become doctors, engineers and lawyers and many also run their own orphanages. In 2010, a Marathi film based on her life was made under the title ‘Mee Sindhutai Sapkal’. It went on to get shortlisted for the 54th London Film Festival. In 2021, she was conferred with the Padma Shri for her contribution to society. Mai has received more than 700 awards for her work.
