To boost the export of perishable commodities via ocean routes, India is in the process of developing sea protocols. The government aims to export fresh vegetables and fruits such as pomegranates, bananas and mangoes via the ocean in a bid to increase export volumes and reduce export costs. Currently, most of the country’s fresh produce is being exported by air and as air freight costs are high, the price competitiveness of the fruits and vegetables is affected. Government officials will consider various factors while developing the sea protocols including the ripening process of the fruits and vegetables and their voyage time.
