Scientist Nigar Shaji to Lead Aditya-L1 Mission

Nigar Shaji, a scientist at the UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), Bengaluru, is the project director of the Aditya-L1 Mission, India’s first space-based mission to observe and study the sun.

Nigar Shaji, a scientist at the UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), Bengaluru, is the project director of the Aditya-L1 Mission, India’s first space-based mission to observe and study the sun. The URSC is part of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and is involved in designing and building satellites. Shaji is leading the Aditya-L1 Mission, which reached Lagrange Point 1, the spot from where scientists will observe the sun for the next five years. Shaji belongs to Tamil Nadu. She pursued her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electronics and communication engineering from the Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli, and Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, respectively. She started working with ISRO in 1987 and contributed significantly to numerous satellite programmes including the Indian Remote Sensing Programme.
