Sarah Sunny, a lawyer from Kerala, created history by becoming India’s first deaf lawyer to argue a case in the Supreme Court. Sunny, who is currently a resident of Bengaluru, is India’s first practising deaf advocate. She argued her case in court with the help of a sign language interpreter. To enable Sunny and other lawyers with hearing impairment to comprehend court proceedings, the Supreme Court of India appointed its own sign language interpreter in October. Sunny completed her law degree from St Joseph’s College in Bengaluru and began practising as an advocate in 2021. She hopes to inspire other specially-abled people to pursue their dreams.
