An agricultural labourer named Sake Bharathi from Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh earned a PhD degree in chemistry by overcoming several obstacles in her life including poverty. Bharathi was the eldest of three sisters and could study only up to class 12 due to her family’s financial limitations. She always wished to pursue higher studies and was encouraged by her husband to do so. Bharathi, who worked as an agricultural labourer to earn a living for her family, would finish her household chores before heading to college. After completing her postgraduate degree, she enrolled in a PhD programme in chemistry, which she has now successfully completed. She wishes to take up a job in the future.
