The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a Safe School Project in order to make roads and footpaths around the periphery of schools in Mumbai safe for children.
Footpaths around schools will be reengineered, zebra crossings will be marked in bright colours and road markings will get a fresh coat of paint.
The BMC is also planning to add road signage and improve the traffic infrastructure on the periphery of roads that house schools such that the footpaths have more walking space.
It is working towards removing old bus stops and placing newly designed bus shelters, which will help remove encroachments from footpaths close to schools.
In some spots, the level of the footpaths will also be matched to that of the road to make it wheelchair friendly.
