India has partnered with Denmark to set up a ‘Smart Laboratory on Clean Rivers’ that will help revive the Varuna River in Uttar Pradesh. This project, which is a component of the Green Strategic Partnership between the two countries, aims to manage rivers and use innovative techniques to restore them.
This project involves the Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, the Government of Denmark and the Government of India and aims to clean the Varuna River in a span of two to three years.
The project has received a total of ₹21.8 crore as funding from the Ministry of Jal Shakti and Denmark and will use advanced models to study rivers.
It aims at encouraging educational establishments and local residents to work with the government to devise methods to protect rivers.
