China experienced a spike in the number of respiratory disease cases including pneumonia among children towards the end of 2023.
According to China’s National Health Commission, known viruses such as adenovirus, rhinovirus and influenza viruses and bacteria such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae are the cause of the respiratory ailments across China. No new pathogens have been identified.
Authorities also associated the cold winter and removal of COVID-19 restrictions in the country with the surge in cases.
Government officials in China have advised healthcare facilities to increase their service hours. The public has been advised to wear masks and exercise caution.
International healthcare experts aren’t worried as they consider the spike in cases normal after the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.
