As we rang the New Year bells on the last minute of December 31, 2019, little did we know that there was a big surprise called coronavirus waiting for us at the turn of the year! CECILIA D’SOUZA spoke to a few RobinAgers to know how 2020 turned out for them.

We have almost completed the tough year—2020! I am sure all of us must have achieved or learnt something from it, be it winning an online tournament or learning to cook, dance or paint. I have also achieved something— running my own magazine called ‘The Young Authors’. It was something I always wanted to do and I finally achieved it in June 2020. Writing articles for my magazine has inspired me to write more. I have also learnt how to work towards getting publicity and spreading the word about my magazine; RobinAge has also helped me achieve my goal. Besides this, I have learnt to play the keyboard.

Some days have been awful and some precious, just like two sides of a coin, and both have to be treasured and cherished. In 2020, I learnt that life is not how you expect it to be—you walk on your path of fate, but the easiest way is to adapt and go with the flow, without expectation. I don’t have many friends and my family is my safety cocoon. During the pandemic, I started to feel really low, but my parents comforted me and told me that the only friends I needed were books. I started reading and love to think that the characters in the books are my companions. I started writing articles, poems and stories. I wanted to share my writing, in which RobinAge helped me a lot. This is my biggest achievement in 2020. I still have a lot of things to achieve in the years to come and believe that life has a lot of pleasant surprises for each one of us.

When the lockdown started, I felt sad as schools were closed and we could go nowhere. But I tried to keep myself positive and used the lockdown time innovatively. As my school time was reduced to just three to four hours a day, I had enough time to practise pencil sketching. Now I can sketch human faces perfectly. I learnt how to convert kitchen waste into manure for plants. I also got a chance to try various science experiments at home. I never had the time to read books, but this year I finished reading two series—‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’. I even managed to complete half of the syllabus for my next academic year.

This year was different, unlike any of the years gone by. The first thing I learnt is that it is important to spend quality time with family members. I got to know each of them closely. I consider this my biggest achievement this year. I got to know my own qualities and tried to nurture them. I explored online education, which is definitely going to help me in the future. I also started to follow a daily exercise routine in order to stay fit and learnt how to do household chores.
