Researchers have discovered a rare palm species that flowers underground in Borneo in Southeast Asia. Though scientists have identified about 300 palm species on the island, this palm species had remained undiscovered until recently. The newly-discovered species has been named Pinanga subterranean, which is derived from the Latin word for ‘underground’. Natives in Borneo consume the juicy, red fruit of the palm.
