Researchers from the Mushrooms of India Community and the Kasaragod division of the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department discovered rare bioluminescent mushrooms in Kerala’s Kasaragod forests.
The mushrooms, known as Filoboletus manipularis, let out a spectacular green light in the night and were among more than 50 mushroom species found by the researchers.
According to researchers, a chemical reaction in the mushroom’s cells causes them to become bioluminescent. The green light is a result of the reaction of oxygen with luciferase and luciferin.
Researchers believe the mushrooms could be toxic and have warned people against consuming them.
These mushrooms thrive in decaying organic matter.
