15 rare earth elements have been unearthed in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh by scientists at the National Geophysical Research Institute based in Hyderabad, Telangana. The discovery of the elements was made when scientists from the institute were carrying out a survey for non-traditional rocks. The elements discovered include columbite, apatite, thorite, zircon and euxenite of the lanthanide series. These elements have applications in electronic gadgets such as televisions, automobiles and cellphones and in various industries such as the medical and aerospace industry.
