A bird species named Dusky tetraka, which is native to the island of Madagascar in Africa, was discovered for the first time in 24 years. The tiny, olive-coloured, yellow-throated, ground-dwelling bird was spotted in northeastern Madagascar by an expedition team. Birds of the species were found near a rocky river in thick vegetation, where scientists believe they could have been hunting for insects and other food.
Because these birds prefer spending time in places near rivers, bird watchers who usually identify birds by listening to their call wouldn’t have heard them in the past, due to the loud sound of gushing river water. This discovery will enhance scientists’ understanding of the species’ ecology.
