Astronomers have discovered a one-in-ten-billion binary star system that is situated approximately 11,400 light years from Earth. Called CPD-29 2176, this system possesses all the conditions to trigger a kilonova, which is an extremely powerful explosion caused by the collision of neutron stars, which results in the production of gold.
This system is rare because the two stars in the system circle each other in an orbit that is unusually circular. Scientists believe that over time, these stars will merge, giving rise to a blast that will produce gold and silver. According to scientists, studying systems similar to this would enhance their understanding of kilonovae.

Only around 10 systems similar to CPD-29 2176 exist in the Milky Way.
