Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected as the new president of Sri Lanka on July 20. The 73-year-old replaced Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who had to resign from the post because of citizen protests against the government due to the country’s economic crisis. Wickremesinghe is from the United National Party (UNP) and is the nephew of the former president, Junius Jayewardene. Wickremesinghe joined the Sri Lankan parliament at the age of 28 in 1977. He has held posts such as deputy minister of foreign affairs, minister of youth affairs and employment and minister of industries. He was appointed as Sri Lanka’s prime minister for the first time in 1993 and has served as prime minister six times.
