Researchers at Northwestern University, USA, have drawn inspiration from marine molluscs to develop a new technique that can fight erosion along coastlines. Similar to how molluscs such as mussels and clams use seawater minerals to develop their shells with the help of metabolic energy, researchers have devised a method that uses these minerals to create a cement-like substance with the help of electrical energy. Researchers conducted experiments and found that electrical energy helped transform sand into a sturdy solid, which could be used to protect coasts from strong waves and increase ocean levels in the future.
