Pravati Parida, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, has been appointed as the deputy chief minister of Odisha along with Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo. This appointment makes Parida the state’s first female deputy chief minister. Parida defeated Dilip Kumar Nayak, a Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader, by 4,588 votes to emerge victorious in the Nimapara constituency during the Odisha assembly elections. Parida pursued her Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) degree from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar and practised law before becoming part of the BJP. The 57-year-old held the post of president for the women’s wing of the BJP in Odisha previously.
