Coached by Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay, 13-year-old Pratitee Bordoloi from Bengaluru, Karnataka, has become India’s only medallist at the 2026 FIDE World Youth Chess Championship held in Montesilvano, Italy. Competing in the Girls Under-18 category against players up to five years older than her, she won the silver medal after remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, recording seven wins and four draws. A Woman FIDE Master (WFM), Pratitee also earned her first Woman International Master (WIM) norm with this performance. She took up chess at the age of eight after her mother recognised her talent for mathematics and believed the game would suit her analytical mind. Pratitee has already won medals at national and international events, including the Under-12 title at the FIDE World Cup in Georgia in 2025.
