This book is set in 1942 Mizoram during the Japanese invasion. The story is about two brothers living with their grandmother and mother. While the matriarch of the family wants the children to imbibe their culture and grow up protecting its integrity, the reality is the steady takeover of missionaries in India’s northeast and the introduction of Western education and medicine. While people are presumably free and paid for the work they do under British rule, the story questions what it truly means to be free and what it costs to fight a war on behalf of the British.

With the impending Japanese invasion, an elite battalion of soldiers called the Lushai Brigade was trained to fight in the plains of Manipur. This battalion comprised of many men and young boys from Mizoram. The elder son of the family goes off to fight for the British. What happens next? Read the book to find out.
