According to a new study by researchers at Tel Aviv University, Israel, plants let out screams that are undetectable to the human ear when hurt or stressed. Researchers conducted a study that showed that tomatoes, tobacco and a few other plants produced airborne sounds as a response to stress that can be detected by creatures including rodents, bats and other plants. For the study, the plants were placed in a box and ultrasonic microphones were kept at a distance of 10cms to record the ultrasonic sounds generated by the plants. It was found that multiple sounds between frequencies of 40 and 80kHz (kilohertz) were generated every hour by plants that were damaged or dehydrated, while plants that were unstressed generated almost no sound.

Adult human beings can detect sound frequencies of around 16kHz.
