Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, a legendary musician and renowned santoor player, passed away on May 10 at the age of 84. He was born in Jammu in 1938. He is known to be the first musician to have played Indian classical music on the santoor—a once not-so-well-known folk instrument from Jammu and Kashmir. He was taught music by his father, Pandit Umadutt Sharma, who was also a musician. He was honoured with numerous prestigious awards including the Padma Vibhushan. Along with flute legend Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Sharma composed music for several Hindi movies such as ‘Silsila’, ‘Chandni’ and ‘Lamhe’.
