Arooj Aftab, a Pakistani singer, producer and music composer, has become the first Pakistani woman to win a Grammy award. The 37-year-old won the award for her song ‘Mohabbat’ in the Best Global Performance category at the Grammys this year. ‘Mohabbat’ is the lead song in her album, ‘Vulture Prince’. She was also nominated in the category of Best New Artist. Her music is described as a mix of jazz, folk, minimalism, neo-Sufi and acoustic sounds. Born in Saudi Arabia, Aftab moved to the USA in 2005 to study music production and engineering at the Berklee College of Music. Her first album, ‘Bird Under Water’ was released in 2014. Aftab has performed at many prestigious venues including the Museum of Modern Art and Lincoln Center in New York City, USA.
