- Tamil Nadu and Kerala conducted a census to collect information about the Nilgiri tahr, an animal that is endemic to the Western Ghats.
- The census was carried out from April 24 to 27 and extended across 176 blocks and 89 blocks in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, respectively.
- The census was conducted by volunteers who underwent training and was carried out with the help of camera traps and customised datasheets.
- It was undertaken to mark Eravikulam National Park’s 50th anniversary celebration. It will give researchers an insight into the population of the endangered Nilgiri tahr and also facilitate genetic research.
