Researchers have discovered a new species of jumping spider in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The newly discovered species was found in rocks near streams at the Bombay Natural History Society’s (BNHS) Conservation Edu-cation Centre (CEC) in Goregaon, Mumbai. The new species has been named Hasarius Mumbai after the city. It belongs to the Salti-cidae family, members of which display peculiar hunting behaviours and are often referred to as jumping spiders. These species do not trap their prey in a web like other spiders; instead, they stalk and hunt their prey by jumping on it. Only two other Hasarius species have been recorded in India—Hasarius kjellerupi, which was found in the Nicobar Islands, and Hasarius adansoni, which is found all over India.
