There has been a continuous rise in the number of mpox or monkeypox cases globally through August with the Democratic Republic of Congo and other African countries being the most severely affected.
Mpox is endemic to regions in west and central Africa. However, the disease has spread to several countries including Sweden, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand.
Mpox is caused by the monkeypox virus and its symptoms include rash, fever, muscle pain and headache. The disease can spread from person to person or animal to person through close contact or objects that are contaminated.
The outbreak of the disease was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization (WHO).
India’s central and state governments are working towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure and detecting and managing the disease.
