Researchers at the Agharkar Research Institute in Maharashtra have found methanotrophs, methane-eating bacteria that have the potential to combat climate change.
The bacteria, which were discovered in Maharashtra’s Vetal Tekdi quarry and the Western Ghats, are the first indigenous methane-eating bacteria to be discovered in India.
They were found in the regions’ wetlands and rice fields and have been named Methylocucumis oryzae. Methanotrophs inhabit areas where both oxygen and methane are found and oxidise methane. This reduces the environmental impact of the gas.
Methylocucumis oryzae is capable of enhancing the growth of rice plants, especially the Indrayani rice variety. Further studies will be conducted to understand its use in combatting global warming.
