A study has found that Mars may have had beaches similar to those on Earth around 3.6 billion years ago. Scientists examined information collected by the Zhurong rover that was launched by China in 2020. Through their study, they found sediments that were similar to the ones on the coastal regions of Earth and proof of the existence of an ocean in the Red Planet’s northern hemisphere. The sediments, now buried under the surface of Mars, are believed to have developed due to the influence of waves and tides. According to scientists, the existence of an ocean on Mars could imply that it harboured life in the past.

In around 50 million years, Phobos, one of Mars’ moons, is expected to disintegrate or collide with Mars.
