Pope Leo XIV, head of the Roman Catholic Church, has broken new ground by appointing Maria Montserrat Alvarado as the head of the communication department of the Vatican. She will succeed Paolo Ruffini as prefect of the Dicastery of Communications in November. This appointment has made her the first laywoman to serve in this capacity. In this role, she will oversee the communication efforts of the Holy See. The Holy See is the body that governs the Roman Catholic Church and the pope is making efforts to advance its communications across the world. Alvarado is a Mexican-American media professional who serves as the president and chief operating officer (COO) of Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), a network that airs content relating to the Catholic Church.
