Geologists made a refined map of Zealandia, a landmass that is almost fully submerged in water and considered the Earth’s eighth continent. Zealandia is located in the South Pacific Ocean under New Zealand. The continent is long and narrow and spans 4.9 million sq kms. Geologists have been aware of the continent’s existence since 2017. As 94% of it is underwater, they had trouble mapping it and determining its structure. Samples of ancient rocks from the bottom of the South Pacific were gathered and analysed to understand the continent’s geology. With the help of the data, geologists created a detailed map with several geological features of the hidden continent including its magmatic arc axis.
