According to the Ministry of External Affairs, a total of 1,11,287 Indians renounced their citizenship in 2021. In the last seven years, a total of 8,81,254 Indian citizens have renounced their citizenship. In 2019, the number rose to 1,44,017 people, the highest ever. The online portal for renunciation was activated in August 2021, after a halt due to the pandemic. End-to-end processing of renunciation of applications has been con-ducted through the online Citizenship Module. Over 1 crore Indian citizens live overseas and around 10,645 foreign nationals applied for Indian citizenship between 2016 and 2020.
