To make UK’s River Thames cleaner, a new super sewer will become operational in 2025. The sewage system that is currently in use was built in the second half of the 1800s. It does not have the capacity to accommodate the sewage generated by London’s growing population. As a result, approximately 40 million tonnes of sewage flow into the Thames every year leading to a polluted and stinking river. The new £4.3 billion upgraded super sewer will be 25kms in length and 7.2mts in diameter. Once commissioned, it will reduce the sewage being dumped in the river by around 90%.
