Letter from the Editor: November 16, 2021

Elections are in the air. Not only can you feel it, but you can see it too.

Potholes are being filled in with hot mix at breakneck speeds; sadly, this mix is unlikely to last till the end of the next year. Hoardings with leaders’ mug shots go up and come down when another leader plans to cross the same road. Changes in bylaws are being cleared to ensure parties are voted back into power and even more not-so-subtle messages are heard with politicians travelling across the globe and within the country. The question we want to ask is, why aren’t the full five years that the leaders are in power used fruitfully? And why the need for this last hurrah?

Do you also pile up all your work and finish it off in a hurry at the last minute in order to impress your teachers? Sadly, most of us end up burning both ends of the candle right before a deadline, when simple planning and time management can serve us much better. Your goal at any age needs to be to complete your work, be it a project or syllabus portion, without stressing yourself out. Last-minute efforts only lead to haphazard work that is filled with errors.

Follow these seven steps to plan your success:

  • Think of your roadmap and create a vision board of what you want to achieve.
  • Break the project into a list of deliverables; remember, smaller steps are easier to complete.
  • Create milestones and remember to acknowledge your effort at every step.
  • If you need to, identify a team you can work with; it could be parents, teachers or friends.
  • Identify the problem areas and try and work out a plan to sidestep those problems.
  • List all the things you will require to finish your project.
  • Find time to analyse your experience after the project is complete. This will help you work more efficiently the next time.
