Letter from the Editor: May 16, 2021

In the last week of April, the Indian Express announced that it would stop covering the ongoing Indian Premier League 2021 (IPL) in view of the COVID-19 situation in India.

In a press note, the Indian Express newspaper’s spokesperson said, “This is a small gesture towards keeping the nation’s attention focused on life and death issues… We don’t have an issue with the game but with the timing…”

But isn’t cricket supposed to be entertainment, which is a stress-reliever? On May 4, after 19 IPL players and staff tested COVID positive, this year’s season was suspended. But didn’t the IPL games that were played take our minds and hearts off the sad news we were hearing from all quarters? Nevertheless, here’s a lesson to learn from what the Indian Express did— do not be afraid to stand against the tide. Do what you think is right, without being bothered or worried about what people will say.

In this second wave of COVID, almost every home has been touched. People are worried and scared as the light at the end of this dark tunnel is still not in sight. Just when we thought India was doing better than the world, the virus bounced back to bite us even harder, but only because we dropped our guard, and our masks. Remember, being safe is your ticket to staying away from COVID.

You can keep yourself and your loved ones protected by doing just three things:

  • Don’t step out unless absolutely necessary.
  • Ask the eligible to get their vaccine, as this will improve their immunity levels and put less strain on health resources.
  • Wear your mask properly, covering your nose and mouth, when out and sanitise your hands often.
