A woman from Sikkim named Eksha Hangma Subba has broken stereotypes by balancing a career as a police officer with her interests in modelling, boxing and riding bikes.
Subba became part of the Sikkim Police at the age of 19 years to support her family financially. Apart from carrying out her duties as a police officer, she also harboured a passion for modelling. She was part of the ‘MTV Supermodel of the Year’ show and earned several assignments, including serving as a brand ambassador for the cosmetics company Maybelline. In addition to these achievements, Subba is a skilled boxer who has competed for Sikkim at the national level. She is also enthusiastic about biking, a skill she learnt from her father.
Subba credits her success to her father, who was her pillar of support and motivated her to pursue her ambitions. Subba’s journey of excelling in diverse fields reflects her ability to break boundaries and challenge social norms.
As we celebrate Women’s Day on March 8, Subba’s story serves as an important reminder of the talents and resolve of women who break glass ceilings despite societal challenges. Women like activist Aruna Roy, Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair, boxer Mary Kom, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, shooter Manu Bhaker, Paralympian Avni Lekhara and pilot Mohana Singh have overcome societal hurdles and achieved excellence in their respective fields. Their inspiring journeys portray resilience and fortitude, shattering societal barriers and creating pathways for future generations to follow.
