In the first clinical trial of its kind, human patients received blood grown in a laboratory. Researchers from the University of Cambridge, UK, developed blood cells from donor stem cells. The trial will study the lifespan of the lab-grown cells when compared to normal red blood cells from the same donor.
If the transplant works, lab-grown blood can be used in treatments for people with blood disorders or disorders in rare blood types where it is difficult to find donors.

The most common bleeding disorder is von Willebrand disease (VWD), in which the body is unable to clot blood because of the deficiency of a particular protein.
