As a student who loves history, I have a few favourite warriors and freedom fighters. One of them is Kuyili. Tamil Nadu has many great historical warriors, and if you are from Tamil Nadu, you might know a few of their names and stories. However, Kuyili is a lesser-known figure, and not many people have heard about her. Even if you have, this article will remind you of her extraordinary bravery.
You may have heard of Queen Velu Nachiyar, the courageous ruler who fought against the British. Kuyili was her personal bodyguard and the commander of her women’s regiment. When Queen Velu Nachiyar planned to reclaim the Sivagangai Fort from British control, Kuyili came up with a daring strategy. She suggested that a small army of women infiltrate the fort disguised as civilians, pretending to visit the Raja Rajeshwari Amman temple inside. Their mission was to destroy the British armoury within the fort.
As the plan unfolded, the warriors had very little time left to execute their attack. In a moment of fearless determination, Kuyili made an unimaginable sacrifice. She wrapped herself in long pieces of cloth, drenched her body in ghee, and rushed into the armoury. Within moments, flames engulfed the area, followed by a massive explosion. Kuyili had set herself on fire to destroy the enemy’s weapons, ensuring victory for her queen.
